Tawang Travel Guide 2025 — The Crown of Northeast India
Tawang is Northeast India’s crown jewel — a high-altitude valley at 10,000 feet in Western Arunachal Pradesh, home to Asia’s second largest Buddhist monastery, a town of Tibetan-roofed houses overlooking the Tawang Chu gorge, glacial lakes, yak pastures, and the world’s highest motorable road passes. The drive from Guwahati to Tawang — over the snow-capped Sela Pass at 13,700 feet — is one of the great road journeys in Asia.
⚠️ Only 4×4 vehicles are permitted beyond Bomdila in winter. Book the Thar Roxx ₹4,499/day or Scorpio N ₹3,999/day. ILP required — WhatsApp 7418700125 and we guide the paperwork.

Day 1 — Guwahati → Bomdila (270 km, 6 hrs)
Via Tezpur (2 hrs), Bhalukpong ILP check post (3 hrs), Bomdila. Stop at Bomdila Monastery and Craft Centre. Overnight Bomdila.
Day 2 — Bomdila → Dirang → Sela Pass → Tawang (170 km, 6-7 hrs)

⛩️ Tawang Monastery — Asia’s Second Largest
Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse) was founded in 1681 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso under orders from the 5th Dalai Lama. At 10,000 feet, with 700 monks in residence, a 9-metre golden statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha, and a library of priceless 400-year-old manuscripts, it is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist centres outside Tibet. The morning prayer session at 6 AM — when hundreds of monks chant in the main assembly hall as incense drifts across the valley — is one of the most powerful experiences in Northeast India.

❄️ Sela Pass — Crossing the Roof of Arunachal
Sela Pass at 13,700 feet is the highest altitude road pass in the world that sees year-round traffic. The landscape here is extraordinarily dramatic — frozen turquoise lakes, Himalayan peaks in all directions, yaks grazing on tundra, army convoys, Buddhist prayer flags, and (in winter) complete snowscapes. The Sela Lake beside the pass road is sacred to the Monpa tribe.
⚠️ Sela Pass can close without warning in winter. Always check BRO (Border Roads Organisation) status before departing. WhatsApp 7418700125 — our team tracks road conditions for all customers.
🏔️ Madhuri Lake (Shungatser) — The Hidden Gem
Madhuri Lake (officially Shungatser Lake) was named after Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit who shot a song here. At 12,000 feet, the turquoise glacial lake surrounded by snow peaks is one of Arunachal’s most beautiful spots. 42 km from Tawang town — driveable only with 4×4 on rough mountain track.
🇮🇳 Bumla Pass — The Indo-China Border
Bumla Pass at 15,200 feet is the India-China border — one of the few points where you can stand at the actual international boundary. Access requires an army permit (arranged in Tawang). Only open October to November. The road from Tawang to Bumla is 37 km and requires 4×4.
