Seven Sisters of Northeast India — The Complete Travel Guide 2025

Seven Sisters of Northeast India — The Complete Travel Guide 2025

The Seven Sisters of Northeast India — Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura — form one of the world’s most extraordinary and least-explored travel regions. Connected to mainland India by the narrow Siliguri Corridor (the “Chicken’s Neck”), this corner of the subcontinent holds over 200 tribal communities, 8 UNESCO sites, and some of Asia’s most dramatic landscapes.

All roads into the Seven Sisters begin in Guwahati, Assam — the region’s gateway city and home of North East Rental, Guwahati’s oldest self-drive car agency since 2019, trusted by 500,000+ travellers.

1. Assam — The Red River State

Assam is the heart of Northeast India — its capital Guwahati is the entry point for all Seven Sisters. Home to the Kaziranga National Park (UNESCO World Heritage, 2,600+ one-horned rhinos), Majuli Island (world’s largest river island), Kamakhya Temple (one of India’s most powerful Shakti shrines), and the mist-draped Brahmaputra River.

  • Must see: Kaziranga NP, Majuli Island, Kamakhya Temple, Sivasagar Ahom ruins, Tezpur, Pobitora, Manas Tiger Reserve
  • Best time: October to April
  • ILP required: No
  • Drive from Guwahati: 50 km (Pobitora) to 450 km (Dibrugarh)
  • Best car: Hyundai Creta ₹2,999/day or Innova Crysta ₹4,499/day for groups

2. Meghalaya — The Abode of Clouds

Meghalaya is the most visited Northeast state for good reason — its Khasi Hills are among the world’s most scenic, holding the world’s wettest village (Mawsynram), Asia’s cleanest village (Mawlynnong), the crystal-clear Umngot River at Dawki, and the ancient Living Root Bridges of Nongriat. Shillong, the capital, is called the Scotland of the East and is the region’s most cosmopolitan hill station.

  • Must see: Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, Mawlynnong, Shnongpdeng, Nohkalikai Falls, Laitlum Canyon, Nongriat
  • Best time: October to December (waterfalls full but roads safe)
  • ILP required: No
  • Drive from Guwahati: 98 km (Shillong) to 185 km (Mawlynnong)
  • Best car: Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos with panoramic sunroof

3. Arunachal Pradesh — The Land of the Rising Sun

Arunachal Pradesh is India’s largest state by area in the Northeast and its most dramatic. Tawang Monastery (the world’s second largest Buddhist monastery), Sela Pass at 13,700 feet, glacial lakes, tribal villages of the Apatani, Nyishi, and Monpa peoples, and the remote Mechuka Valley make it one of Asia’s great road trip destinations.

  • Must see: Tawang Monastery, Sela Pass, Ziro Valley, Bomdila, Dirang, Mechuka, Pasighat, Bumla Pass (Indo-China border)
  • Best time: March to June, September to November (Sela Pass open)
  • ILP required: Yes (Inner Line Permit — we assist free)
  • Drive from Guwahati: 270 km (Bomdila) to 540 km (Tawang)
  • Best car: Mahindra Thar Roxx 4×4 ₹4,499/day

🚗 Explore Northeast India at your own pace. Self drive cars from ₹1,199/day. Zero deposit. Unlimited km. Own garage maintained fleet. Airport delivery at LGBI Guwahati.

4. Nagaland — The Land of Festivals

Nagaland is the home of 16 fierce and proud Naga warrior tribes — and their annual Hornbill Festival (December 1-10) at Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima is called the “Festival of Festivals” for good reason. The Kohima War Cemetery is one of Asia’s most moving WWII memorials, and the Dzukou Valley flowers from June to September in a riot of colour.

  • Must see: Hornbill Festival, Kohima War Cemetery, Dzukou Valley, Naga Heritage Village, Touphema Tourist Village
  • Best time: December (Hornbill), June-August (Dzukou flowers)
  • ILP required: Yes
  • Drive from Guwahati: 280 km (Dimapur), 290 km (Kohima)
  • Best car: Mahindra Scorpio N ₹3,999/day

5. Manipur — The Jewel of the East

Manipur’s Loktak Lake — with its mysterious floating islands called phumdis — and the Keibul Lamjao National Park (the world’s only floating national park, home of the Sangai deer) are unlike anything else on earth. Imphal’s Ima Keithel (the world’s only all-women’s market) and the Kangla Fort add extraordinary cultural depth.

  • Must see: Loktak Lake, Ima Keithel, Kangla Fort, Keibul Lamjao NP, Sangai Festival (November)
  • Best time: October to March
  • ILP required: Yes
  • Drive from Guwahati: 610 km (2-day drive)

6. Mizoram — The Land of Blue Mountains

Mizoram is one of India’s most peaceful and literate states — perched on dramatic terraced hills rising from the Indo-Myanmar border. Aizawl, the capital, clings to a ridge at 1,130 metres with views in every direction. Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) at 2,157 metres is Mizoram’s highest peak.

  • Must see: Aizawl, Phawngpui, Champhai Valley, Dampa Tiger Reserve, Vantawng Falls
  • ILP required: Yes
  • Drive from Guwahati: 620 km

7. Tripura — The Hidden Kingdom

Tripura is the most underrated of the Seven Sisters. Unakoti — with its giant 7th century rock-cut sculptures of Shiva — is a jaw-dropping site that rivals Mahabalipuram. Neermahal, the water palace on Rudrasagar Lake, is one of Northeast India’s most photogenic structures.

  • Must see: Unakoti rock carvings, Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary
  • ILP required: No
  • Drive from Guwahati: 590 km
