🥁 Hornbill Festival, Nagaland — December 1-10
The Hornbill Festival at Kisama Heritage Village, 12 km from Kohima, is called the “Festival of Festivals” — and it earns that name. All 16 Naga warrior tribes gather for 10 days of traditional dances, warrior performances, indigenous games, tribal food stalls, local craft markets, and the legendary Nagaland Rock Concert. The costumes — hornbill feather headdresses, boar tusk jewellery, hand-woven shawls — are among the most spectacular on earth.
How to reach: Drive Guwahati to Kohima (290 km, 6 hrs) with Scorpio N ₹3,999/day. ILP required — we assist free. Book 4-6 weeks ahead — December is our busiest month. Call 7418700125.
💃 Bihu Festival, Assam — January, April & October
Bihu is Assam’s soul — celebrated three times a year, each marking a different agricultural season. Rongali Bihu (April) is the most celebrated — the Assamese New Year, marked by group Bihu dances, Husori performances going house to house, feasts of pitha (rice cakes), and community gatherings across every village in Assam. Bhogali Bihu (January) is the harvest festival with massive bonfires (Meji). Kongali Bihu (October) is the quiet, reflective festival of lamps.
Best places to experience Bihu: Sarusajai Stadium Guwahati (main event), village celebrations in rural Assam (most authentic), Brahmaputra riverfront Guwahati. Drive yourself with Maruti Swift ₹1,799/day.
🎵 Ziro Music Festival, Arunachal Pradesh — September
India’s most magical music festival takes place in Ziro Valley, in the heart of Apatani tribal land in Arunachal Pradesh. 4 days of indie, folk, and experimental music under open skies, surrounded by pine-topped hills, paddy fields, and bamboo houses. Ziro is everything mainstream music festivals are not — intimate, adventurous, and genuinely alternative.
How to reach: Guwahati to Ziro 350 km (7 hrs). ILP required. Drive with Hyundai Creta ₹2,999/day. Accommodation sells out 3 months ahead.

🦌 Sangai Festival, Manipur — November 21-30
Named after Manipur’s state animal — the rare brow-antlered Sangai deer — the Sangai Festival is Manipur’s answer to Nagaland’s Hornbill. 10 days of Manipuri dance (Ras Lila, Thang-Ta martial arts), indigenous sports (Sagol Kangjei — the world’s original polo), film screenings, and craft exhibitions at the Sangai Cultural Festival venue. It coincides with the best season to spot the Sangai deer at Keibul Lamjao.
🌸 Wangala Festival, Meghalaya — October/November
The Wangala is the harvest festival of the Garo tribe — a 100 drums celebration with the thunderous beat of gongs and drums, traditional Garo dances in full ceremonial dress, and the lighting of the sacred festival fire. The main celebration at Asanang village near Tura is particularly spectacular.
🎉 Losar Festival, Arunachal Pradesh — February/March
Losar is the Tibetan New Year — celebrated most magnificently at Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. Cham mask dances, butter sculpture offerings, yak butter tea ceremonies, and the burning of the effigy of the previous year’s evils make it the most visually spectacular festival in the Eastern Himalayas.
🌼 Chapchar Kut, Mizoram — March
Chapchar Kut is Mizoram’s spring festival — celebrated with the Cheraw (bamboo dance), the most recognisable traditional dance of the Northeast. Celebrated in March when the jhum (shifting cultivation) fields are cleared, it is a festival of joy, colour, and community.
