Why Self Drive is the Best Way to Explore Meghalaya
Meghalaya's greatest treasures are not on main roads. Dawki's crystal river is a 30-minute diversion off the Shillong highway. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat requires a detour to Tyrna village. Nohkalikai Falls — the highest plunge waterfall in India — has a viewpoint 5 km off the main road. A cab or shared taxi will skip all of these.
With a North East Rental self drive car, you stop where you want, for as long as you want, with unlimited kilometres included in your daily rate. You're not watching the meter.

Road Conditions: Guwahati to Meghalaya
The Guwahati–Shillong highway (NH 6) is a good-quality national highway, mostly 4-lane from Guwahati to Jorabat, then 2-lane through the Meghalaya hills. The drive is scenic but involves many switchbacks after Jorabat. Allow extra time in peak season (November–January) when traffic builds up near Police Bazar.
Fuel Stations on the Route
Guwahati is well-supplied with fuel stations. Fill up before crossing into Meghalaya at Jorabat. There are fuel stations in Shillong but they can be crowded. In Cherrapunji and Dawki, fuel stations are available but limited — don't leave Shillong below half tank.
