Meghalaya is one of the most stunning destinations in all of India — and it's right at Guwahati's doorstep. From the crystal clear waters of the Dawki (Umngot) River to the living root bridges of Mawlynnong, from the perpetual waterfalls of Cherrapunji to the misty, pine-lined roads of Shillong — a self drive from Guwahati to Meghalaya is one of the great Indian road trips.

The best part? No Inner Line Permit is needed. Just pack your bags, pick up your car from North East Rental, and go.

Why Self Drive is the Best Way to Explore Meghalaya

Meghalaya's greatest treasures are not on main roads. Dawki's crystal river is a 30-minute diversion off the Shillong highway. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat requires a detour to Tyrna village. Nohkalikai Falls — the highest plunge waterfall in India — has a viewpoint 5 km off the main road. A cab or shared taxi will skip all of these.

With a North East Rental self drive car, you stop where you want, for as long as you want, with unlimited kilometres included in your daily rate. You're not watching the meter.

Road Conditions: Guwahati to Meghalaya

The Guwahati–Shillong highway (NH 6) is a good-quality national highway, mostly 4-lane from Guwahati to Jorabat, then 2-lane through the Meghalaya hills. The drive is scenic but involves many switchbacks after Jorabat. Allow extra time in peak season (November–January) when traffic builds up near Police Bazar.

⚠️ Monsoon Warning (June–September): Cherrapunji receives the world's highest rainfall. Landslides are possible on the Shillong–Cherrapunji road. Drive slowly, avoid night driving, and check road conditions with the NER team before departing. Dawki River is too murky during peak monsoon — wait until October for the crystal blue water.

Fuel Stations on the Route

Guwahati is well-supplied with fuel stations. Fill up before crossing into Meghalaya at Jorabat. There are fuel stations in Shillong but they can be crowded. In Cherrapunji and Dawki, fuel stations are available but limited — don't leave Shillong below half tank.

Is ILP (Inner Line Permit) Required for Meghalaya?

No ILP needed for Meghalaya. Meghalaya is open to all Indian and foreign tourists without any permit. Inner Line Permit is required only for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur — and North East Rental provides free ILP assistance for those states.
